Arise & Be Acknowledged!
Our voices need to be heard too, our abilities shared, our dreams realized, our gifts & talents accepted…we are as beautiful as anyone!
Whether you were recently diagnosed or injured or born this way can cause a myriad of responses within or without.
It is one thing to be born limited, restricted & accepted. You’ve not known anything else.
It’s another type of game for those of us who have lived in both realms. Each of us have a desire to live our lives as everyone else. I, for one, now has had a sampling of what it must be like to experience discrimination, or to be the last member chosen for team membership.
Pretty much everyone is afraid of the unknown or unfamiliar. Thankfully, we are not still living in the days when disabled or “deformed” people were hidden away. Still, many of us are:
- looked at quizzically,
- shied away from like we’re contagious,
- chosen last,
- denied acceptance,
- considered unintelligent or incapable.
I’m here to tell you that as a person who had physical abilities that have been taken away by disease…
- attempt to answer those questioning looks,
- constantly proclaim laughingly that “I’m not contagious,”
- attempt (often successfully) to find a way to make accommodations for myself,
- show forth personal strengths,
- educate people about disabilities.
Though sitting, butt level in a crowd, can be an odoriferous dangerous place to be, it’s imperative that you participate in life as fully as possible. Go to the game, the festival, the mall, etc.
While it’s been a challenge to redefine my life, make a new plan Stan, & not slip out the back Jack. It’s time to be coy Roy & work to set your self free!
